Dual registration requirements for registered nurses and paramedics

19 Oct 2018

When paramedicine becomes a regulated profession on 1 December 2018 all practising paramedics must be registered with the Paramedicine Board of Australia (the Paramedicine Board).

Registered nurses who are qualified as a paramedic and wish to practise as a paramedic are required to hold dual registration in nursing and paramedicine with both the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and the Paramedicine Board.

Graduates of double degrees in Nursing and Paramedicine may want to register in both professions upon completion of their study. There are currently three double-degrees approved by both the Paramedicine Board and the NMBA, which are taught by the Australian Catholic University, Monash University and Queensland University of Technology.

While there are certain elements of practice common to each profession, it’s important all practitioners who hold registration as both a registered nurse and a paramedic are aware of how they plan to meet the individual professional standards that apply to each profession. In particular, dual registrants must meet and continue to meet the requirements of the recency of practice, continuing professional development and professional indemnity insurance registration standards as set by the Paramedicine Board and the NMBA.

Dual registrants are required to pay the respective application fee, initial registration and registration renewal fees for each profession. You can find a full schedule of registration fees on both the NMBA website and Paramedicine Board’s website.

Information on dual registration requirements for registered midwifes and paramedics will be announced in the coming weeks.

Fact sheets

The NMBA and Paramedicine Board have developed fact sheets to help answer questions raised by practitioners and graduates who intend to hold dual registration in nursing and paramedicine.
